Report: Mashal temporarily moves Hamas HQ to Qatar

According to Asharq al-Awsat, the headquarters for Hamas will temporarily be located in Qatar, after being moved out of Damascus, Syria. This move will ensure that foreign officials will feel comfortable meeting with Hamas at their headquarters as the volatile situation in Damascus has interfered with the Islamist movement’s ability to host international partners. Nevertheless, the entire Hamas Politburo has not yet relocated to Qatar, which allows Hamas’ parliamentary bloc which is opposed to the Doha deal to continue criticizing and questioning Khaled Mashal’s decision while he is away in Qatar. In addition, it is important to note the large U.S. military presence in Qatar, possibly allowing it to be a future mediator for a two state solution.
