Though many are skeptical as to whether presidential and parliamentarian elections will be held in the Palestinian territories in the near future, as the Hamas-Fatah reconciliation agreement stipulates, a first practical step towards the elections was taken with the opening of a voter registration office in the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, Hamas claims that Israel is trying to sabotage the reconciliation through arrests targeting Hamas lawmakers in the West Bank. “Every time we move towards reconciliation and reactivating the Palestinian parliament, we see Israel targeting our lawmakers in the West Bank,” a Hamas lawmaker said. The Islamist movement said it would only take part in the elections if its lawmakers are safe from arrests by Israel.
