Report: Hamas’ Mashaal will not seek reelection

Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal

Khaled Mashaal, leader of Hamas, will not run for reelection as leader of the Islamist group, source told Ma’an News Agency on Monday. The deputy head of Hamas’ politburo,  Moussa Abu Marzouk, is widely expected to replace him. The rule within Hamas provides a two year limit for the political bureau chief. Mashaal has been Hamas’ politburo chief since 1996. After an Israeli assassination attempt in 1997 on Jordanian soil, Mashaal has led Hamas from exile in Damascus.
