Israel’s Southern Command has been ordered, by the IDF general staff, to prepare for a possible large scale operation into the Hamas controlled strip. Among IDF senior officers, there is growing concern over the smuggling of anti-tank missiles into Gaza and the significant increase in Hamas weaponry. With only operational plans to be finalized and distributed to the concerned IDF units, the operation could be ready to launch in the next few months.
Hamas marks in 2012 the third anniversary of Operation Cast Lead. Althought the coming operation would ressemble it in tactics, senior IDF officers said the offensive could be much larger than operation Cast Lead. Officers also said that they did not received orders from the government to carry out the operation and that they were preparing it so that they could launch it rapidly. Between 680 rockets have been fired into Israel in 2011 and with the preparations for a large scale operation by the IDF, the situation at the border could escalate into violence very quickly.
