What was once a garbage-strewn land sprawling across Gaza City’s Mediterranean coast has become a loud construction site. Al-Rashi Road, otherwise known as Beach Road, is being transformed into a seaside promenade in an attempt to boost Gaza’s frail public image. The project is representative of the economic recovery of the narrow strip of land, despite Israeli limitations on import of construction materials. The UN estimated that around 90,000 tons of cement were smuggled through the tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border every month – 10 times as much as what Israel allows through the crossing points.
Not everyone is happy, though. Over the course of the past decades, illegal, makeshift, houses have spawned on the proposed construction site. Now, those inhabitants are being kicked out and relocated. Archaeologists, too, share concerns about the construction project, as it directly and indirectly threatens Gaza’s history and heritage.
